Emily Varga

Partner • Mediator & Arbitrator • Parenting Coordinator

Emily is a co-founding partner of VML Family law and has been practicing family law for the majority of her legal career. She is passionate about helping families in conflict to be able to strategize and create a plan of action for moving forward. 

As a certified mediator and arbitrator, Emily excels in facilitating productive and amicable resolutions outside of the courtroom, allowing clients to make decisions that prioritize the best interest of their families. Recognizing the importance of fostering healthy co-parenting relationships, Emily also acts as a parenting coordinator for intact and separating families, helping parents develop and implement effective parenting plans that promote the well-being of their children. Emily's expertise extends to the courtroom, where she is a skilled litigator. With a proven track record of success, she fearlessly advocates for her clients' rights and interests at all levels of court including on International Child Abduction matters (matters under the Hague Convention), mobility applications, acting as Counsel for Children, running Domestic Specials, Appeals, hearings and trials in both the Alberta Court of Justice and the Court of King’s Bench. Understanding that every family's situation is unique, Emily assists clients in all aspects of family law needs. From adoption to asset division, child and spousal support matters, and the preparation of separation and prenuptial agreements, she provides comprehensive legal guidance tailored to each client's specific circumstances.

  • Emily attended law school at University of Calgary and while there she volunteered with Student Legal Assistance (a litigation law clinic assisting low income individuals), and was awarded the 2014 Grant McGibbon Prize. Prior to attending law school, Emily graduated from McMaster University with an Honours Bachelor of Arts, has worked in the book publishing industry in Toronto, and in Aberdeen, Scotland writing government policy. She is an active member of the Canadian Bar Association and remains at the forefront of the evolving family law landscape through ongoing professional education and active involvement in legal associations.

    Emily is passionate about community involvement and has volunteered with the Canadian Bar Association, the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, Law Day at the Calgary Court House, the Children’s Legal and Education Research Centre and various volunteer Boards in Calgary. Emily enjoys spending time with her family and loves traveling.

Holly McCord Lonseth

Partner • Mediator • Parenting coordinator

Holly is a co-founding partner of VML Family Law and has a deep-rooted commitment to serving families and prioritizing the best interests of Children. Holly was born and raised in San Diego, California, where she was drawn to the law at an early age with a goal to advocate for children. Holly brings extensive expertise and a compassionate approach to handling all aspects of family law matters. 

Holly is a skilled parenting coordinator, assisting parents both in intact and separating families in creating effective parenting plans that prioritize the needs of their children. As a mediator, Holly is committed to helping families find peaceful resolutions outside the courtroom. With a patient and empathetic demeanor, Holly guides clients through the mediation process, empowering them to make informed decisions that lay the foundation for a brighter future. Understanding that litigation is sometimes necessary to protect the rights and interests of their clients, Holly is a formidable advocate in the courtroom. With meticulous attention to detail and extensive knowledge of family law legislation Holly vigorously represents clients in matters related to custody, child support, spousal support, and matrimonial property division.

  • Holly attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where she graduated cum laude (with honors) with a degree in political science and a minor in child development. She went on to attend the University of San Diego School of Law, which she chose for its world renowned child advocacy program called the Child Advocacy Institute (“CAI”). During her time in law school, Holly was the Vice President of a student run organization called Advocates for Children and Education and she worked closely with the founders of CAI. Upon completing law school in 2014, she went on to take and successfully pass the California Bar. Holly moved to Calgary shortly thereafter and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2016.

Suman Parmar

ASSOCIATE Lawyer

Suman is a dedicated family lawyer committed to guiding families through their toughest challenges. As the first lawyer in her family, Suman’s journey embodies determination and a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact.

Suman's background is rooted in public service, after earning her Political Science degree from the University of Calgary, Suman worked alongside the late honorable Minister Manmeet Bhullar. Suman gained her legal education at the University of Leicester in the UK, perusing Family Law and Dispute Resolution. During her articling period as a Student Prosecutor with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, Suman gained valuable courtroom experience and honed her litigation skills, preparing her for her role as a family lawyer.

Admitted to the bar in 2021, Suman has since practiced exclusively in family law, handling a wide array of family matters, from separation and divorce to property division, parenting, child support, spousal support, and emergency protection orders. Serving as an Associate Lawyer at VML Family Law, Suman remains steadfast in her commitment to delivering exceptional legal guidance.

Proficient in English, Punjabi, and Hindi Suman connects with clients from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of support and understanding. Her approach is grounded in empathy and advocacy, striving to resolve disputes out of court whenever feasible, while remaining prepared to litigate when necessary.

Tanisha Smith

Student-At-Law

Tanisha joined VML Family Law as an articling student in June 2024. She is an internationally trained law student with multi-national legal exposure in Canada, the United Kingdom, and India.

Tanisha attended law school at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, where she graduated with Honours. Prior to her legal education, Tanisha received Honours in Ancient Mediterranean Studies with a minor in History at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario.

Tanisha interned at a Pan-Indian multi-disciplinary law firm during her studies abroad. She advanced her experience in the legal field by working and interning at family law firms in Ontario and Alberta.

Tanisha actively volunteers at the Calgary Humane Society and the Elizabeth Fry Society. She volunteered with the Elizabeth Fry Society working with young offenders for four years. As a Youth Justice Committee member, she collaboratively worked with youth to determine an individualized sanction in this extrajudicial measure program. Currently, she participates in the mentorship program for youth at the Elizabeth Fry in Calgary.

Caleigh Hunt

Caleigh has been working in family law since 2016 and has established herself as a skilled and compassionate paralegal. Her friendly rapport with clients and colleagues brings a refreshing perspective to the family law community. Caleigh is committed to helping clients navigate their legal journey and aims to reduce client’s stress by providing excellent communication as well as quality, detail-oriented work.

Caleigh's dedication to her work extends beyond client interactions. She leverages her versatile skill set to contribute to various aspects of the office, including marketing initiatives and implementing effective organizational systems and strategies. Her attention to detail and proactive approach enhance overall efficiency and contribute to a seamless workflow. Hannah Grant

Receptionist

Hannah comes from a social service background in Child and Youth Care with an Indigenous Perspectives Designation, and 10 years of direct experience working with diverse children, youth and families, using a strength-based, trauma-informed approach. 

Training in trauma-informed care, family systems, and crisis prevention aids her in providing effective care to our clients. Hannah recognizes the importance of positive connections and fostering strong relationships, and uses both in order to collaboratively support clients through their experiences and navigating complex legal issues. 

Her educational and professional skills demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and empathy in working with others. Hannah’s warm and calm demeanour will greet you as the first point of contact and aid in a high level of care for our clients.

Kamiko Bosch

Paralegal

Kamiko is a seasoned legal assistant with over a decade of expertise. She is kind and compassionate and has a wonderful reputation with other legal professionals in both the family law and litigation law communities. She is eager to learn and has an understanding that family matters are not black and white and often quite emotional, which she is always happy to provide a friendly ear to listen to and build trust with clients that their matters are in good hands. 

Her dedication to the legal field is matched only by her commitment to her family. She is a proud mother of two beautiful boys and one fur baby. Outside of the office Kamiko finds joy in the magical world of Harry Potter and is an avid Taylor Swift fan.
